The Indian government wanted to create a local mobile operating system. It aims to compete with Google’s Android OS and have the added benefit of prioritizing privacy and security. They were concerned about how foreign tech companies were using the data of Indian citizens. They also were concerned that the general public had no real alternatives to Google.
To that end, IIT-Madras recently disclosed that one of the startups from its incubators had created a brand-new in-house operating system. The operating system is called BharOS or Bharat OS. The 100 million smartphone users in India, who only have access to the American-owned and -managed Android and iOS operating systems, are the target market for BharOS. BharOS promises to be a more secure and private mobile operating system.
India positions Bharat OS, also known as BharOS, as its response to Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. People have always been uneasy about how companies collect, store and use the data generated by Indian smartphone users. The reason behind this uneasiness is that all smartphones run on Android or iOS. These problems are something BharOS aims to fix.
JandK Operations Private Limited (JandKops) , founded at IIT Madras, created the Android Open Source Project known as BharOS.
What makes it unique from iOS or Android?
The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) is the foundation of BharOS. It shares some similarities with Google’s AndroidOS as a result, but not at all with Apple’s proprietary OS.
- The big difference between the BharOS and AndroidOS is that the former does not come with any Google services or Apps.
- The absence of preinstalled apps on BharOS gives users the freedom to download any app of their choice.
- BhasOS users can download the APK files very easily for the apps they want to use.
- And the most important part which lays the foundation of BharOS is prioritizing security and privacy issues.
- It will make use of a program called Private App Store Services (PASS). This program will review and select only user-safe apps.
Almost all Android apps can currently run on this OS, but the company has not yet stated how it intends to engage the smartphone market. Additionally, it is unclear whether or not the general public and regular users will ever have access to this operating system.
