Conducting elections is a crucial task for any democracy. It ensures that the citizens have the right to choose their representatives in a free and fair manner. The Election Commission plays a pivotal role in conducting elections across India.
The Constitution of India provides for an independent Election Commission which functions as autonomous body responsible for conducting free and fair elections. The Election Commission comprises three members including
- one Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and
- two other election commissioners.
The role of the Election Commission starts with preparing electoral rolls or voter lists, which contain names of all eligible voters in each constituency. These lists are updated regularly to ensure that they must be accurate and updated.
Once the electoral rolls are prepared, commission announces the date(s) on which voting will take place. They also set up polling booths across different constituencies where people can cast their votes.
During this time it is essential that proper security measures are put into place in order to prevent any kind of malpractice during voting. Therefore, adequate police personnel are deployed at sensitive locations to maintain law and order.
On election day itself, agents from different political parties monitor every stage of voting closely to ensure transparency during counting later on. This helps avoid any discrepancies or errors from occurring before official results are announced by the commission once all votes have been counted.
In addition to these duties mentioned above, there is another critical responsibility that falls under its jurisdiction- enforcing Model Code Of Conduct (MCC). MCC sets guidelines for political parties regarding campaigning activities like rallies etc., ensuring fairness among contesting candidates while keeping an eye out against hate speech or propaganda being spread via social media platforms ahead of polls
Overall, it’s not easy work coordinating large-scale events such as national-level elections but thanks largely due diligence displayed by EC officials throughout each phase involved: preparation beforehand through post-election follow-ups after final tallies come in – we can rest assured knowing our voices heard loud & clear when exercising our right to vote.
