Deputy National Security Advisor (NSA), Vikram Misri has been named as the next Foreign Secretary. Vikram Misri is Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer from 1989 batch, who is be appointed as India’s next Foreign Secretary with effect from July 15, 2024 succeeding Vinay Kwatra.
Before this appointment as Deputy NSA, he has also served as Ambassador of India to China form 2019 – 21. Misri is believed to be a key role player in talk between India and China after tensions significantly heated up after 2020 standoff in eastern Ladakh and later Galwan Valley clash between Indian and Chinese armies. And this appointment has also been seen as India’s look to navigate various foreign policy challenges including cold ties with China following eastern Ladakh border line.
Misri is having an extensive experience in diplomacy. He has also served as private secretary to three Prime Ministers of India : Inder Kumar Gujral, Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi.
In his illustrious career, Misri had also served as Ambassador of India to Spain (2014-16) and Myanmar (2016-18). Besides, he had also been in various Indian missions including US, Germany, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Belgium.
